  Syll-a-bles

A haiku has three lines of five, seven and five syllables, right?

Sort of. The 5-7-5 structure is based on the Japanese form, but their syllables are shorter than Western ones.

That's why Eastern haiku don't translate into seventeen English syllables and vice versa
