Seen as one of the 'hardcore' Pop Artists, Tom Wesselmann painted bright and bold still life.

A psychology graduate influenced by Abstract Expressionism, he became best known for his nudes - a subject returned to throughout his career.
The Great American Nudes series from the sixties are perhaps his best known works.

The series of one hundred works have ambiguity and almost arbitrary use of colour as their hallmarks; described by one critic as 'pneumatic glamour'.
Wesselmann brought paintings out into the third dimension. Early on he would fuse a flat canvas with everyday objects; blinds, radiators.

Later, he would work with enamel and aluminium to further enhance the paintings.

He disliked the Pop Art label and was envious of artists such as David Hockney who he saw as having "the great good fortune not to be a part of anything, just an artist.. and that's what I wanted to be and still want to be".   Some of his last works, Sunset Nudes incorporated other modern art works into the background. Although its use comments on how art had somehow lost its uniqueness, Wesselmann felt that his own work was "charged with their very presence"   To Wesselmann, the naked female form was not salacious but "just nudity". He did not want to be pigeonholed as a painter of nudes, but his continual reinvention of the form provides a fitting legacy.
